Women's Summit

Fri-14 Jun 2024 - 12:06 AM

The Feminist Summit is following with great concern and denunciation what the de facto Houthi authorities have carried out and are carrying out in terms of the campaign of arbitrary arrests that targeted female and male employees of international organizations, United Nations bodies and agencies, and civil society organizations, which included spouses and children of detained women. Houthi group security agencies in Sanaa and Hodeidah raided their homes and business offices, interrogated them, confiscated their electronic devices, took them to an unknown destination, deprived their families of reaching out to them and of knowing of their fate.

The campaign of arbitrary arrests launched by the de facto authorities of the Ansar Allah Houthi group is part of an approved and systematic policy that the group has followed for long period of time against civil society, activists, media professionals, human rights workers, and workers in the humanitarian sector and aid access, since this crime and this illegal behavior is not the first of its kind. Thus, it violates its obligations in the field of respecting and protecting human rights and the basic legal and humanitarian work of organizations authorized to work inside Yemen, as is a matter that is contrary to national customs and laws, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law, which protect employees from any attack or harassment, and ensure that they perform their work without fear for their freedom, security or personal safety. In particular, The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which Yemen is a party, affirms the right of every individual to freedom and security. It prohibits “arbitrary detention” and depriving any person of his or her liberty, and requires that arrested persons be informed of the reasons for their arrest at the time of their arrest, and that they have the right to be informed immediately of the charges against them.

The lack of transparency in the campaign of arbitrary arrests led by the Houthi group against male and female detainees constitutes a very real danger, and leads to the exposure of male and female detainees to a variety of inhuman or degrading treatment and abuse on personal dignity which escalated to torture during interrogation, mainly to Obtain confessions under duress and other human rights violations.

The Feminist Summit declares its absolute solidarity with female and male detainees, standing by their fundamental right to freedom and rejecting their arbitrary arrest and exposure to any violation of their freedom, dignity and safety. Laying claim to the de facto authorities (DFA) of the Ansar Allah group (Houthis) to comply with their duties under international human rights law and international humanitarian law to carry out a prompt release for them without any constraints or conditions, as the Feminist Summit also warns against any use of these arbitrary arrests as a political pressure card or to achieve special interests, or to fabricate any false accusations against them, and holds the de facto authority of Ansar Allah Houthi group fully responsible for the detainees lives and safety.

In this regard, The Feminist Summit calls on all local and international organizations to join in solidarity in demanding and pressuring the de facto authority of the Ansar Allah Houthi group to immediately stop the campaigns of arbitrary arrests that violate the right to freedom, safety, security, work, and whatsoever of subsequent violation of its duties under international human rights law and international humanitarian.
